The Shift
Stuck at midlife, with a life that looks fine from the outside?
Four days in Sedona to work out who you want to be next, and say it out loud.
Not sure yet? Ask us.
Here is who I usually see in the room.
You have the title.
The one your parents are proud of. You are good at it, and people assume it is who you are.
Some of you have children.
Some are still at home, and you want them to watch you build a life you chose. Some have left, and you are wondering what the room is for now.
You have probably read the books.
Brené Brown to Eckhart Tolle to Michael Singer to The Four Agreements, all the way down to Gabor Maté. You have done the therapy. You understand trauma upside down and backwards, and you are ready to move on from it. And you still cannot say, in one sentence, what you want.
You are scared to say it out loud.
To your partner, your friends, your family, who have built their lives around the version of you that is about to change.
I had the corner office. I was sitting in it, crying.
I was a vice president at The Body Shop, and I was good at it. But the office was full of people I no longer had anything in common with, and I had the sick feeling before work in the morning. When I tried to explain it to my family, they looked at me like I had lost my mind.
My door was always open, and people kept coming through it with the things they could not say anywhere else. Their marriages. The lives they were not living. And, more than once, someone they had lost, and whether I thought they were still near. I would listen, they would leave lighter, and I would go back to the marketing plan.
Everything changed the day I called myself a medium out loud, in front of people who had only ever known me as a VP. The gift had been in that office the whole time. I just stopped giving it to the marketing plan and started giving it to people.

And then we went back in with the bowls.
Steve, my partner, was in management at Sony Music. We both left for our gifts, and then we did the thing nobody expected. We built Pause + Expand, and now we bring sound baths and this same work into boardrooms and onto conference stages. The kind of companies we used to work for now bring us in.
Some of the companies we work with

“I wanted to bring my talents back to the boardroom.” Jennifer, at Intuit.
We made the shift, we are still living it, and we do it every week in the rooms you are trying to leave. You do not have to keep the woo woo on the sidelines either.
Here is what I have seen work.
What you need is a guide, not a coach.
You already know the answer. I help you hear it. A coach teaches you something you do not know, and that is not your problem. You have been talking yourself out of the answer for years. Four days is how long it takes to hear it again.
Shifts happen faster in groups.
My teachers always worked in groups. You say the thing you have never said, and nobody flinches. Then you watch someone else say theirs, and you realise you are not the only one. No amount of work on your own can do that.

The crisis at midlife is simple.
Your logic and your intuition have been arguing for years over who you are allowed to become, and the sensible one has been winning. Most people who do this work pick a side.
That is why there are two of us. I get your intuition speaking again, so the answer comes from you. Steve gets your logic to listen, and turns what your intuition says into a plan you can start on Monday.
By Sunday the two of them agree on one sentence. That is what you go home with.
“Steve is very calm and grounded, and Jen is very energetic. It is a perfect duo.”

Jennifer Spencer
The medium. A VP at The Body Shop before she left and found the name for what she had been doing her whole career. She sees what is underneath.

Steve Fernandez
The strategist. A Masters in Psychology and an MBA, then management at Sony Music, then he left to be an artist full time. He cuts through the story you tell yourself.

We did not choose Sedona because it is beautiful. We chose it because it works.
We moved our lives here to be close to something. The sensible voice is quieter in this valley, and what takes months at home takes an afternoon.
Not all of this is serious. Some of it is just four really good days.

The hike. Coffee Pot Trail, an easy way up and a harder one.

The spoon. You bend it with your mind. Then you decide what else was only a story.

The evenings. Dinner that turns into midnight and nobody wants to leave.

The shopping. Yes, there is an afternoon for that too.
The four days
Four days to your answer.

From the room
You do not have to take my word for it.
Nancy came at fifty-two. She had been a marketing director for fifteen years and was afraid to become the therapist she wanted to be. Too old, she said. Could not afford to start again. In her words: “Working with Jennifer taught me to feel safe to transition at 52.” She left the job.
“I have just opened up a block that I have had for years. It opened up this weekend.”
“I found my people.”
“You will feel like a different person on the other side of it.”

Hear them say it, two minutes, captioned.
None of them had it figured out when they arrived.
Things people said to me before they came.
“I’ve done the Costa Rica retreat that felt amazing, and I’m still stuck.”
You came home glowing, and by the second Monday it was gone. Nobody told you what to do with it. So you filed it under a nice weekend, and you stopped trusting weekends.
“I can’t take four days for myself.”
You can take four days for a work trip, a family thing, someone else’s crisis. Four days that are only yours feels like something you have to earn first. You have been earning it for twenty years.
“Someone is going to ask what this costs.”
A partner, a parent, the voice in your own head that keeps the books. You have the answer ready for everyone else’s spending. For your own, you go quiet.
“I’m too old to start again.”
You are not starting again. You are starting from everything you have built. Nancy said this at fifty-two. She came, and she left the job.
“I’m not sure I’m ready.”
Nobody who came was sure. You do not need to be.
Every one of these was said by someone who came anyway.
What four days can and cannot do.
Four days can get you to the sentence. By Sunday you can say who you want to be next, out loud, to people who heard you say it. Most people arrive unable to do that and leave able to. I can promise you that part.
Four days cannot do the months after. The first weeks are when the sensible voice comes back. There is a small group I run for that, and I will tell you honestly whether you need it.

Tell me where you are and I will tell you what I see. If it is not the right fit, I will say so before you pay.
The practical details.
When should I arrive and depart?
The first session begins on the evening of Thursday, February 4, so arrive earlier that day to settle in. If you can, come a day or two before. Arriving early gives you space to ground and adjust to the rhythm of Sedona. The retreat closes with the final session at 1:00pm on Sunday, February 7. Many people fly out that afternoon or evening, but staying a little longer is a good way to let it settle.
Which airport, and how do I get to Sedona?
Most people fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), about a two hour drive. You can rent a car at the PHX Rental Car Center, or take Groome Transportation, which runs daily shuttles between Phoenix and Sedona with stops at local hotels.
Should I rent a car or take the shuttle?
The shuttle is easy and drops you in West Sedona, but we recommend renting a car. Sedona is spread out, and your own vehicle means more freedom in where you stay, easier access to trailheads, and the option of a day trip to Flagstaff or Oak Creek if you extend your stay. After you register we will try to connect people so you can share a car if flight times line up.
Where should I stay?
Sedonya is at 120 Deer Trail Drive in West Sedona, and we recommend booking your stay in that area for the easiest access. There are plenty of options for every style and budget, from boutique hotels to Airbnbs. There is parking at the center.
What meals are included?
Group lunches on Friday and Saturday. Other meals are left open so you can follow your own tastes, and you will get plenty of recommendations from us. West Sedona has three grocery stores including Whole Foods and Natural Grocers if you have a kitchen.
Is it only Jennifer and Steve leading?
We are your main guides throughout, and you will also be joined by a small circle of facilitators and teachers. Expect guest sessions ranging from ceremony to movement and deeper teachings. Guest teachers are announced closer to the retreat.
Is this therapy?
No. If you are in the middle of a crisis right now, this can wait for you, and it will do more for you when the floor is steady. Tell me where you are and I will say so honestly.
One more thing.
Nobody talked me into leaving. Somebody sat with me until I could hear myself. What I needed was people who saw me, who understood where I was, and who made me feel that this was a normal part of the shift and not a breakdown. That is what the room is for.
If it is not the right time, stay close. One note a week, from me, to people in the middle of this.
Jennifer
